Greedy Bastards

Now that Hurricane Irene has passed, I have a bone to pick. This is a short rant, but this has been bugging me since word of this storm was going to hit our shores. We all heard that this storm was massive and could do some serious damage, a category 1 or 2 to hit the eastern seaboard and major cities including DC, Baltimore, Philly, and New York. I love watching the weather channel just to watch the weathermen bug out in the middle of it all. Luckily for me, I am a apartment dweller so I don’t have to worry about boarding up my home and bracing for the worst. Now officials will tell you to stock up on food, batteries, flashlights, and a first aid kit. So not even a day and a half before the storm was supposed to hit, ALL OF THAT WAS GONE!!! No flashlights. No batteries. No water. I had to improvise a bit and use a strobe light and a kiddie flashlight. Hey it worked and I loved the colors it gave off. I found some batteries by searching deep at my local Target. As far as water, I came back the day the storm hit and found only a few bottles of Dasani water left. So I said screw it and got it. I didn’t load up on too much food because I figured that the storm would only be around all night and would be gone early Sunday so I didn’t see the point. OK so here’s my beef, how come all of the junk food aisles were cleaned out? How come people were buying frozen food knowing that power could shut down for days which means that your food is going to end up in the trash anyway? If you freaked out during the winter storms and got flashlights, shovels and heaters, what happen to those things during this storm? Did the flashlights get blown out? Someone used up all of the bandages? It makes absolutely no sense to me. But my main concern is the food. Just like any other American pastime, 4th of July, Memorial Day, SuperBowl Sunday, we share big meals with loved ones and cuddle up to those we care about. We use food to celebrate everything, even natural disasters. Are these storms used as an excuse to pig out? Judging from the aisles at the grocery stores I’ve been to, I’d say yes. I don’t buy much because I don’t need much. I have mostly non-perishables such as canned goods, cereal, crackers, things that won’t put too much weight on me while keeping me fulfilled. It’s not like I have a boo I can cuddle up to and burn off those extra calories :) So, I get a little here and add on to whatever I already have. Obesity problem solved! But I can bet many people don’t think like that…

So for those who are reading this, can you do ME a favor? Next time we have a winter storm, hurricane, earthquake, or whatever, save a little something for ME? The flashlights you got last year? I bet they still work and you probably misplaced them. Go look for it. They have to be somewhere lying around the house. Don’t just go to the store just to buy an extra pair, or 3 or four for you and the family dog just to come home and find the ones you already had. Businesses, please make sure that you have enough shovels, heater and flashlights stocked for those who need it. I know the game you guys run every year and quite frankly, that’s f*cked up. And finally to the greedy bastards who run to the grocery stores and clear out every aisle every time a major storm hits, I hope you have a cuddle boo to help you burn off those extra calories while you’re stuck in the house with nothing to do. Because otherwise, you’re just being a a**hole.
